The marriage ceremony


Marriage in the civil form of Croatian citizens registered in the registers of births in the Republic of Croatia

To enter into a civil marriage in front of the registrar, the bride and groom report their intention to marry in person to the registrar in charge of the place where they wish to enter into marriage. The registrar, in agreement with the bride and groom, determines the date for the marriage, usually within a period of 30-45 days from the date of notification of the intention to marry. The marriage is solemnized in an official room in the presence of the bride and groom, the registrar and two witnesses.

Necessary documents for entering into a civil marriage:

  • valid identity cards
  • identity cards of witnesses – godparents

Other documents, extract from the birth register, birth certificate, will be checked by the registrar himself in the information system of state registers.

The total amount of expenses that the bride and groom are obliged to pay is HRK 70.00 (EUR 9.29) for drawing up a record of the intention to marry and HRK 140.00 (EUR 18.59) for a civil marriage, which is a total of 210 HRK 0.00 (EUR 27.88).

The mentioned costs can be paid by bank payment card at the POS terminal of the Registrar's Office.

Getting married in a religious form

The bride and groom who wish to enter into a religious marriage are obliged to request a certificate from the registrar who is responsible for the area where the religious community is located, before whose official they wish to enter into the marriage, a certificate of fulfillment of the assumptions for concluding the marriage.

The bride and groom for a religious marriage submit the same documents as for a civil marriage and pay an administrative fee in the amount of HRK 70.00 (EUR 9.29) for drawing up a record of the intention to marry.

The certificate of fulfillment of the assumptions for entering into a religious marriage is valid for 90 days from the date of issue.

The official of the religious community before whom the marriage was concluded in a religious form is obliged to submit to the registrar a certificate of the marriage concluded in a religious form within five days from the day of the marriage.

Wedding e-Registration service

enables the bride and groom to submit a civil registration of their intention to marry in the official premises of the registry office 30-45 days before the desired date, without their physical arrival at the registry office. Administrative fees can be paid by card using the 'photo and pay' method payment slip or internet banking.

For registration the e-Registration of wedding is required

a minimum significant security level or level 3 credential, for example m/Token or use of Internet banking access data included in the e-citizen system. The precondition for using the application is that the bride and groom have an open personal user box (OKP) in the e-citizens system, otherwise they should open it. Newlyweds can thus track the status of the application in the e-wedding application. All documents will be sent to the bride and groom in OKP.

Marriage of a foreign citizen in the Republic of Croatia

The following documents are required for the marriage of our citizen with a foreign citizen:

  • Extract from the birth register issued in the country of birth in accordance with international agreements and conventions (if the extract is not on an international form, a translation into Croatian is required)
  • Certificate on the unmarried status of a foreigner issued in accordance with international agreements and conventions (required translation into Croatian)
  • Confirmation that there are no obstacles to the marriage of a foreign citizen in the Republic of Croatia and that this marriage will be recognized in the country of which he is a citizen (translation into Croatian required). This certificate can be an integral part of the certificate of unmarried status
  • An identification document with a picture
  • Proof of citizenship (passport)
  • Required presence of an authorized court interpreter for the language of a foreign citizen who marries in the Republic of Croatia.
